350GB PTS file

Postby EpicScan LTD on Wed Mar 03, 2010 11:08 pm

How would I distribute this so a client could easily view the data? We work with cyclone 6.0-7.0 Would I need multiple pts. files and pod's to distribute this efficiently? Also am I able to import multiple pts's on to different layers in Pointools? I know Edit has a layering system but what if I'm just using ViewPro? This will determine what package my company decides to purchase. Also how much would Point cloud decimation increase performance on a larger 50-100gig file? The clients we send the data to won't always have quad core i7 dual gtx295 systems for handling this data, this raises the question of weather or not finding an optimal decimation number for files based on size is worth it.

Thanks,
Isaac

Hi Isaac,

By my (admittedly rough) calculations a 350gb PTS file would be around 63 billion points and would result in a POD of around 60-70gb  .
Even being able to copy this from one location to another would be an achievement.

If you want to efficiently distribute this data there are a couple of options. You can, as you say, decimate the data. How much you decimate it will depend on what your clients want to do with it. Alternatively you can section the data into smaller chunks using the clip box or layers.

The layer feature is only available in Edit, not View Pro. I would recommend Edit for the type if work you are talking about.

You can import PTS files using the POD Creator, this can output a POD per file and then these can all be opened in Pointools and put on layers if required.

Edit:

I am told by the powers that be that it would be more like 7 billion points, not 60!
